How to become an all-star at Brawl Stars: a video game for beginners and professionals
A guide I wish I had when I first downloaded the game and had no idea what to do
Brawl Stars is a fast-paced mobile game released by the Finnish video company Supercell in 2017. It is a multiplayer online battle game that entertains both beginners and esports professionals. In this guide, I will walk you through why you should play Brawl Stars and how to play it.
Part 1: Why you should play Brawl Stars
Your parents probably told you that video games are a waste of time and that only “bad children” play them. So let me shed some positive light on the gaming industry. The video gaming industry has reached a market size of $217 billion as of 2022 and is estimated to grow at a rate of 13% until 2030 (Grand View Research 2022). As of 2023, around 300,000 Americans are working to create new games, improve user experience, develop new gaming technologies, or play as an esports professional (IBIS World 2023). Gaming is no longer a niche activity for the “bad children” but rather a mainstream entertainment. If you are a curious person like me, don’t you want to try playing a game yourself to see what the hype is all about?
Now that you are intrigued by the world of video games, I would like to share some reasons why Brawl Stars should be your first game to play.
Reason 1: Your friends will be so excited!
If you ask around, you will find at least 1-2 friends who are loyal Brawl Stars fans, and they will be thrilled to play with you. This is because Brawl Stars is one of the most popular games worldwide with 376 million users and 54 million daily active users (esports.net 2024). Its biggest target audience is people like you in the age of 18-24. Brawl Stars is a community-oriented game that allows you to both meet new friends and connect with existing friends. In fact, 88% of the players reported that gaming expanded their social circle (ESA 2023).
Reason 2: Life is all about challenging yourself
Brawl Stars is a game that challenges players at all levels. It tests your reflexes, strategic thinking, and teamwork. When you lose several battles in a row, you might feel frustrated and want to smash your phone against the wall. This is where the real challenge starts. Are you going to admit defeat or are you going to keep trying? This is also the question we often ask ourselves in real life during challenging times. Playing Brawl Stars is an entertaining way to train your mental strength, which can benefit you in real-life obstacles.
Reason 3: It will make you happier
Playing Brawl Stars offers similar mental health benefits as playing sports. You may not have a few hours for a game of soccer, but you will always have 3 minutes for a game of Brawl Stars. 93% of the players feel that gaming helps relieve stress, and 89% of the players feel that gaming brings joy (USA Today 2022). Brawl Stars has cartoonish aesthetics, upbeat music, and cute-looking battle characters, which will cheer you up in an instant. Had a bad day at school? Play a game of Brawl Stars. Feeling down because it’s raining outside? Play a game of Brawl Stars. Spilled your milk carton all over the kitchen floor? Play a game of Brawl Stars.
Reason 4: Free and easy
There is no other game like Brawl Stars that ticks all the boxes for a casual, beginner gamer. It is mentally stimulating due to its battling nature. You can play it at anytime and anywhere: at a movie theatre before the show starts, in the car waiting for your gas tank to fill up, or at a shopping mall’s bench when your legs need a break. Most importantly, Brawl Stars brings you consistent comfort and entertainment without spending a dime.
Part 2: How to play Brawl Stars
Now that you are convinced to try Brawl Stars, let me show you the ropes, so you know what to do the next time your friends invite you to play. All you need to do is pick a battle, select a character, and work as a team of three.
Pick Your Battle
Each battle game is 3 minutes long, and there are five types of 3v3 battles you can choose from.
● Brawl Ball: Soccer fans, this is the battle for you! Score goals with the ball to win.
● Heist: Crack open the safe in the enemy base while defending your own safe.
● Gem Grab: Collect 10 gems from the center of the battle arena as a team.
● Hot Zone: Take over the hot zones and keep your enemies out of the zones to win.
● Knockout: Hunt down the enemy team before they kill you.
Different battles require different strategies to win. For example, in Heist, you and your teammates might want to decide who will defend your safe and who will attack the enemy’s safe. However, in Hot Zone, you want to approach the zone together. If you go alone, the enemy team can easily eliminate you.
Select Your Character
There are 5 main types of battle characters you can choose from (supercell.com).
● Marksman: They are the snipers and rain pain from a distance. But if your enemies get close, it’s game over for you.
● Assassin: They are the Marksman’s nightmare. Although assassins can only attack at a short range, you can single out your enemy and ambush them. All it takes is patience for your prey to come to you.
● Healer: They are the doctors on the battlefield to keep teammates alive.
● Controller: They are the traffic police. Their shots have a wide range and can push their enemies into areas of the arena that your team desires.
● Artillery: They throw all kinds of bombs, such as mines, yarn balls, and wine bottles, depending on which artillery character you choose. Don’t assume you’re safe by hiding behind an object because their shots go over walls.
Players have different personalities, which might lead them to prefer different characters. For instance, if you like being the star of the show, you might want to be an assassin character as they are designed to kill. However, if you like being the Robin to Batman, you might want to be a healer or controller instead. Take your time to explore the characters to figure out who your favorite is.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
You would rather encounter good enemies than bad teammates. I’m sure you don’t want your friends to yell at you for causing them a game, so there are a few common rules you should know.
1. No man left behind: Don’t leave your teammates behind if they are getting attacked. If one teammate dies, it will become a 2v3 battle, and you and the other player will probably die too.
2. Communication is key: Let your teammates know what character you are playing, which part of the battle arena you are heading to, and which enemy character you want to attack. A coordinated attack is better than an aggressive attack.
3. Location, Location, Location: Like buying real estate, you and your team want to occupy a prime location in the battle arena. An ideal location should have walls and bushes for hiding and a pathway to escape when in danger.
That’s all the basics you need to know, and the best way to learn is to just do it. So, let’s brawl!
